A collection of twenty-five issues of "Te Waka Maori o Niu Tirani". Comprises twenty-three issues: volume 12:1-23. Wellington, George Didsbury, 1876. AND: Two issues: volume 1:2 & 1:13. Gisborne, Poverty Bay, James Grindell, 1878.
. Folio (18.9 x 31.3 cm). The first twenty-three issues of 1876 are bound together in contemporary half calf, rubbed. Pp. 1-300. With parallel text of Ma›ri and English. With horizontal fold in the middle, two hole punches at inner margin, last leaf with minor text loss. Some minor staining. "Te Waka Maori o Niu Tirani" published between 1871-9 was edited by James Grindell. The intention was to revive the old "Te Waka Maori o Ahuriri" which had ceased publication in July 1871. Williams 463. AND: Four issues of "Ko te Kahiti o Niu Tireni" (1876) are also withbound.AND: Two additional issues of "Te Waka Maori o Niu Tirani" from 1878, as issued, unbound, one (no. 13) has a strip of paper along spine. Both are strengthened at outer edge. One (13) partly with some small holes going through text, some marginal loss of paper, some staining. All the papers are housed in a specially made box. This narrative is based on the author's journal kept during his six years of travels. He visited most of the Australian colonies and Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), made natural history observations and collected a variable herbarium which was sent to Kew. Rare, first edition of a M‹ori translation of Friedrich Strass's "Der Strom der Zeiten" (1803) which depicts human history from the year of creation around 4000 BCE to "present day". This part covers the Old Testament and up to Solomon. One more part was issued in 1849 continuing up to the life of Christ. It's based on an English summary made by Bambridge for Bishop Selwyn. Bambridge was a schoolmaster and photographer who served at Waimate Te mission in the 1840s. The M‹ori translation is done by Robert Maunsell, a leading scholar of the M‹ori language and culture.
